Ghostwire: Tokyo (Limited Edition X4LP Boxset)

Face the unknown… assuming they have a face.

A paranormal partnership has formed between Bethesda, Tango Gameworks and Laced Records as we present the dark Japanese electronica of Ghostwire: Tokyo on vinyl record.

Tango set out to reflect the juxtaposition of modernity and history in Tokyo, where neon high rises and historic temples stand side by side. Composer Masatoshi Yanagi’s goal was to express this unique game world by utilising the three wind instruments of Gagaku (ancient Japanese court music): shō, hichiriki, and ryuteki (dragon flute). He also explored traditional instruments including the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and the chappa (cymbals), as well as traditional musical scales. These elements intermingle with modern, tenebrous synthesised sounds and distorted waveforms.

Singer EvE performs the disquieting nursery songs that punctuate several of the disc sides, injecting the overall score with a child-like eeriness.

This Limited Edition 4LP box set, exclusive to the Laced store, features blue and black galaxy-effect discs. 60 tracks have been specially mastered for vinyl and will be pressed onto heavyweight discs. These come in printed inner sleeves that in turn fit into a deluxe rigid box. The sleeve artwork by the team at Tango Gameworks fuses cutting edge graphic design with folkloric J-horror.

Resident Evil Village (Limited Edition Deluxe Double Vinyl)

The houses of Laced and Capcom are once more united to bring the unsettling soundscape of 2021’s Resident Evil Village to wax.

This Laced-exclusive Limited Edition double LP boasts indulgent ochre and black marbled discs. 25 tracks flecked with dark fairy tale touches have been mastered specially for the format and will be pressed onto heavyweight LPs. These slip into a deluxe double gatefold sleeve adorned with art by the team at Capcom.

Resident Evil Village saw the series return to a European rural setting, indulging in all the gothic and grisly trappings associated with classic horror literature, mythical creatures, Grimms' Fairy Tales and the like. Much of the music leans heavily on an orchestra palette, especially the various spooky, scraping, scratching textures available to string instrumentalists; but there are also plenty of thumping, clanking, driving and droning synth and sampled elements present, as well as some extra-creepy uses of voices throughout.

The Village music team was led by veteran Capcom and Resident Evil composer Shusaku Uchiyama (Mega Man series, DMC4) and relative newcomer Nao Sato (Monster Hunter Rise). They were backed up by meaty contributions from Marcin Przybyłowicz (Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077) for the “Village of Shadows” story book sequence, and Brian D'Oliveira (Resident Evil 7, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) with folk artist Aga Ujma on the woozily wonderful credits song “Yearning for Dark Shadows”.

Ace Attorney 20th Anniversary (Limited Edition X6LP Boxset)

All rise out of respect for a venerated series…

It’s been 20 years since courtroom adventure Ace Attorney began life on the Game Boy Advance with the release of Gyakuten Saiban (‘Turnabout Trial’) in Japan. The series’ lovable characters, witty dialogue, and iconic “Objection!” finger point have found fans all over the world, selling well over 6 million copies. With an anime and a live-action movie, as well as multiple manga series, stage plays, escape room games and orchestra concerts (among other adaptations) to date, Ace Attorney has transcended the world of video games.

To celebrate the occasion, Capcom and Laced Records are deepening their video game soundtrack courtship with the announcement of the Ace Attorney 20th Anniversary deluxe vinyl box set. The release presents a selection of 121 specially remastered tracks from six mainline games in the series: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Justice for All, Trials and Tribulations, Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies, and Spirit of Justice.

This Limited Edition, exclusive to the Laced store, features six ‘attorney’s badge gold’ heavyweight vinyl. LPs slip into spined, printed inner sleeves all housed in a deluxe rigid board slipcase.

The record sleeve features gorgeous new illustrations by ultimatemaverickx (DeviantArt profile), the Capcom superfan artist behind Laced Records’ celebrated Mega Man vinyl sleeves. The front cover character parade brings together the attorneys and their allies, while the rear panel gathers the dastardly prosecutors. Inner sleeve pieces depict reimagined moments from across the six games, such as Franziska von Karma whipping Detective Gumshoe into line, and the gang hanging out at the Wright Anything Agency offices.

Down the years, the zany exploits of Wright and co have been soundtracked by distinctively hooky, melodic music loops. An Ace Attorney score can cycle through myriad palettes, including upbeat pop and rock, downtempo funk and jazz, melodramatic synth, orchestral grandiosity, spiritual chanting, clownish ditties, and dreamy electro. Reminiscent of TV soaps, game shows and news broadcasts — as well as ‘80s and ‘90s movie scores — there’s a playfulness to the series’ music that’s irresistibly endearing. And, who can forget that quintessential video game music moment when the soundtrack kicks up a gear during cross-examination after presenting the right evidence?

Composition duties for first three games fell to Masakazu Sugimori (Viewtiful Joe), Naoto Tanaka aka Akemi Kimura (Bayonetta), and Noriyuki Iwadare (Lunar: The Silver Star, Grandia); while Toshihiko Horiyama (Mega Man series, Onimusha), Hideki Okugawa, Shu Takumi and Masami Onodera contributed to subsequent games.
