Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released in May of 2010 for the Nintendo Wii and was the first ever sequel to a mainline Super Mario game. The score is performed by the Mario Galaxy Orchestra and is composed primarily by Mahito Yokota, with a number of contributions by Ryo Nagamatsu and veteran series composer Koji Kondo.
A number of tracks make a return for this sequel—as expected—but are orchestrated this time around. The arrangements of original Mario tracks are outstanding and I believe still the best to this day. It's been some time since I've played SMG1 or SMG2 but both games are the absolute best 3D Platformers of all-time. We had so much fun playing them back then. Look, I adore Super Mario Odyssey as much as any Nintendo fan but I personally can not see the Galaxy duo ever being topped; they both retain a well-deserved 97 metacritic score after all. The second Galaxy was a little tougher than the first. The Cosmic Clone Mario portions of the game were certainly challenging. Even though I haven't played Super Mario Galaxy 2 since 2010, I remember having getting my back-end kicked a number of times during those levels. Also a few of the Speed Runs, Silver Stars and sadly for me, something I've never completed... The Perfect Run. I've forgotten about it before this upload. While I was looking up information on the soundtrack, seeing it jogged my memory, or repressed nightmare! Someday I'll have to load SMG2 back up and finally complete that. I hate leaving games unfinished. I remember attempting over and over again to no avail. Saying to myself: I'll take a break and come back to it later. Only to never revisit the cursed level. I also had much more free time to game over a decade ago but maybe one day, I'll give it another go.
