New Super Mario Bros. DS
New Super Mario Bros was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS and the original score is composed by Asuka Ota and Hajime Wakai. This was my first MIDI file game audio extraction and it took a bit longer to do than I had originally thought. Mainly because the instrument samples need to be synced properly with the MIDI sound files and if they're not... What you end up with just sounds ridiculous(I admit, I got distracted more than once just having fun playing around with the sound samples). Once I got the syncing routine down packed, it was just the matter of the usual editing, finding the loop points, amplifying and labeling each track.
The tracks weren't that difficult to organize, considering most of the default track titles at least gave an indication of where they would play, such as "NCS_BGM_VS_SHUFFLE(VS. Mode Minigame Shuffle)" or "NCS_BGM_VS_REVERSI(Bomb-omb Reverse)". There was a small handful that weren't as clear-cut, such as "NCS_BGM_CASINO3(Wanted!/Mario's Slides)" or "NCS_BGM_MINICOIN(Whack-a-Monty/Hide and Boo Seek/Coincentration)" but even considering those tracks, the labeling process was mostly straightforward. There are some redundant tracks but with different files names such as "NCS_BGM_VS_SELECT" and "NCS_BGM_VS_DICISION". I only included one of them rather than both. The quality of the soundtrack turned out quite well and I think it's one of the best I've heard.
For VS. There are only two tracks that play during a match, the VS. Grassland Theme and VS. Snow Theme Underground. No-matter which VS stage is played: Grass, Ice, Pipe or Castle stages. Those two songs are the only ones that play—just in case somebody thinks tracks were omitted. There is an unused Credits track, which I found interesting.. It seems like it was used for the beta version but it was left in the game files. I didn't include any of the sound effects(jumping, hitting blocks and so fourth) but I did include the short jingles from the main game, minigames and vs. matches. Basically anything with music.
I am glad I finally got around to doing this soundtrack because it really is one of the better—if not the best—soundtracks from the New Super Mario Games. The track "Castle theme" has been one of my favorites since I first played NSSB years ago. It is such a great piece of music and my favorite of the Castle Themes from any Super Mario game.
So, there we are. Uploaded in both FLAC and MP3 which were directly converted from the original files. You'll find New Super Mario Bros Soundtrack in the archive.
