Top Soundtracks of All Time

As someone who is very deeply into videogame soundtracks I want to ask what are your favourite soundtracks of all time, which you won't miss in your collection at any cost, maybe because of childhood memories or just being unforgettable. So let me know!

Mines are:

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution/ Mankind Divided

-Rise of the Tomb Raider

-Halo Reach

-Super Mario Galaxy 2

-Immortals: Fenyx Rising

-Ori and the Will of the Wisps

-Batman Arkham Knight

-Borderlands 3 (Michael McCann Songs)

These are definitely the ones I have in mind which I don't want to miss at all. All-Time Classics for me!

I am generally indecisive when it comes to my all time favorites of anything(constantly changing the order) but I do have to put a list together one day of my absolute favorites. I admit, it would be quite the project. Like you, I'm very passionate when it comes to Video Game Music. Putting together this website back in 2012 was for that very reason. I can tell you do as well because you have a nice soundtrack list there.

Quick little story: I essentially listened to Deus Ex: Human Revolution every week for years on end. I had the CD stuck in the player of my old car from when it was released in 2011 until I got a new player. Surprisingly, I still am not tired of that soundtrack. Listening to it as often as I did, I should be done with it for a lifetime. Mankind Divided I very much enjoyed as well but HR holds a special place in my heart.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, Ori(both soundtracks), Batman Arkham Knight and City, and Borderlands 3 are ones I regularly go back to for a listen.

I can imagine that your collection is plains-big, and so, hard to decide 😉

Deus Ex HR was my first OST-CD, and the reason I bought the game, besides the trailers. Before I never was in touch with that franchise, which is now my absolute favourite! As you can imagine, my heart broke when Eidos told us that the new Deus Ex game is cancelled. When I hear Michael McCann in "Suoerfuse" or "Borderlands 3" I can just imagine how great and timeless the OST would have been.....

In our review of the DE:HR Soundtrack over a decade ago, I mentioned that a friend of mine purchased HR because of how much he enjoyed the soundtrack. So you're not alone there. It is indeed a great franchise. I enjoyed them so much that I actually unlocked 100% of the Trophies in both titles.

Unfortunately, the gaming industry on the AAA side of things had been trending towards a bloated, multi-year, over-budget mess lately. Square-Enix is reporting loses even with millions of copies sold. That's not sustainable long term. Hopefully that changes but we'll have to see.

If you're interested in similar soundtracks to HR. I'd suggest another favorite soundtrack of mine, Mirror's Edge by Solar Fields. His style is psybient/glitch/atmospheric sound similar to McCann's work. I attached a video we made years ago from our YouTube Channel, highlighting the similar natures of each soundtrack.

Yes, the AAA-Industry is a mess right now, that's why I changed from PS4 to NIntendo Switch. It seems Nintendo is the only company who cares more about bringing fun games. They are not perfect at all (when we look at their incomplete sport games for example), but much better than Sony and MS in my eyes.

I need to try Mirror's Edge again, I had the OST once, but it never could captivate me, so I deleted it. ME3 is awesome though!
