Since we're halfway through 2018, I thought I'd make a spot here for anybody to mention video game music that's caught your attention this year. Let's hear it!
Here are a few soundtracks that we've kept notes on so far. There are still dozens more to listen through.
Iconoclasts: Adventurous soundtrack that varies from Electronic Break-Beats, Synth Rock and Chiptune to Passive Atmospheric. This is one that slipped under our radar until just a week or so ago but I'm glad we caught it. It's certainly worth playing through.
Dragon Ball FighterZ: Not exactly a series I ever cared much about but I have to say, the soundtrack is fantastic. It's primarily a Hard Rock Album; impressive guitar work, double-bass, synthesizer. If you enjoy the Hard Rock/Metal genre, this one is definitely with listening to.
Fe: Is a laid back Ambiance centered score. Tranquil is the best way to describe it. The Cello, Viola, Piano and Violin perform beautifully. I still have Fe on my to-play list and I'm looking forward to progressing through it.
God of War: This is one of my favorites this year. I was somewhat concerned at first with Gerard Marino(previous GoW I-III composer) not composing the score of this reboot but my concerns were safely put to rest once I heard the music. The Orchestra plays beautifully in this eclectic soundtrack and that simple three-note chant is still stuck in my head. The God of War music is safe in hands of Bear McCreary.
Octopath Traveler: I didn't know what to expect from the music when I played Octopath Traveler, being the game's visuals have a simplistic but attractive design, I thought that the music may not the same level of effort put into it compared to games such as FINAL FANTASY, I should have known better. It's composed with the care and compassion that most of Square-Enix games are. I highly recommend this one.
Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 5: This installment was released in 2017 but the soundtrack was not released until this year. If you're a fan of EDM more specifically Trance, then this is for you. A couple of the tracks are a bit repetitive but if you're familiar with EDM, that comes with the territory.
The Crew 2: While not quite the same style, a number of tracks remind me of Forza Motorsport 5 last year by Kaveh Cohen and Michael Nielsen(another very good soundtrack). It's style is Modern Rock as well as some blends of Electronic and Hip-Hop. It makes for an easy casual listening experience.
Yakuza 6: While I'm still trying to decide if I enjoy this album more than Yakuza 0(one of my favorites) from last year. There's no denying it's a grade A score. There are many more Japanese Vocals tracks at the end of the 3rd Disc but as a trade off, there aren't as many Rock tracks. Overall, there is more variety in this soundtrack.
Those are some of the highlights and now, back to the 31(and counting) original game soundtracks awaiting our review.
